Dr G Hemaprabha is a new Director of ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute and her tenure will be up to 2024, reports The Economic Times.
An official release issued on Friday said that she was appointed after the recommendations of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, under the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.
For the first time in the history of the 111-year-old institute, a woman is heading the institute.
She has research experience of over 34 years in sugarcane genetic improvement and so far developed 27 sugarcane varieties and registered 15 cane genetic stocks, said the release.
