New Delhi: The first month of the 2022-23 season witnessed a 14.73% dip in the sugar production in India compared to the previous season, states the NFCSFL data.
Sugar mills in the country had manufactured 4.05 lakh tonnes in October 2022-23 as against 4.75 lakh tonnes during the same period in the 2021-22 season.
The report released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSFL) estimates that the sugar production in the country is likely to be around 36 million tonnes in the 2022-23 season.
According to the NFCSFL, the retreat rains lingering in the main sugarcane growing states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh having been completely withdrawn, the new sugar season has commenced in the States of Maharashtra & Karnataka. The cane crushing operations in Uttar Pradesh & rest of the cane growing states would kick off in a week’s time.
Sugar production in Karnataka was 2.80 lakh tonnes in 2022 as against 3.10 lakh tonnes during the last season. In Maharashtra, sugar production in 2022 was 80,000 tonnes as against 1.40 lakh tonnes in October 2021. During October 2021, a total of 160 sugar mills were operating as against 134 mills in 2022.
