Indonesia: Sugar tax implementation plan to affect sweetener consumption in country

Sugar consumption in Indonesia is likely to be affected as many have demanded the government to implement a sugar tax.

Ernawaty, public health researcher, at Airlangga University (UNAIR) Surabaya, said, “Government should take demand seriously as many Indonesians are fond of these sugar-laden snacks and drinks, and the public awareness campaigns on the dangers of excessive sugar consumption did not show positive result.”

Considering the current economic conditions sugar tax should not be implemented, said Elia Mustikasari, economist, at Airlangga University Surabaya.

Askolani, director general of customs and excise issued a statement confirming that the regulations for implementing the sugar tax are being prepared.
