Yamunanagar: Sugarcane crushing at the Saraswati Sugar Mill began on Monday, a week earlier than last year, reports The Tribune. Starting cane crushing operations earlier by the mill management will help the cane growers, especially small farmers, take wheat crops after harvesting cane.
Wheat cultivation after cane harvesting is likely to be done in about 25,000 acres of area.
Chief operating officer of the SSM, S K Sachdeva, said that last year the mill had crushed 162 lakh quintals of cane and this season the mill has set a target of crushing 175 lakh quintals of cane.
Farmers are demanding the government announce the rates of the sugarcane this year.
