UP govt asks sugar mills to maintain transparency in ethanol output

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a new sugarcane molasses policy for the betterment of the sector. It has asked the mills to maintain transparency in the production of ethanol from sugarcane juice and syrup, reports The Hindustan Times.

Under the new policy, sugar mills have been directed to reserve at least 20% of total molasses production. The state government spokesperson stated that some conditions have been put on exports to other states and countries.

Alcohol produced from molasses is used in distilleries, petroleum depots, chemical units and pharmacies.

This season around 158 sugar mills have started cane crushing operations including 28 mills run by the UP Co-operative Sugar Mills’ Association, 23 by UP State Sugar Corporation, 104 by the private sector and three run by the central government.
