Wheat planting gains momentum in India

According to the farm ministry data, farmers have planted wheat on 4.5 million hectares since October 1, when the current sowing season began, up 9.7 per cent from a year ago, reports Reuters.

The data will be updated once the states start sharing the details of the wheat cultivation with the centre, said an official from the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare.

Wheat is cultivated in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. The soil moisture level was increased in October and November due to late rains that helped farmers to increase the area under wheat cultivation. Harvesting of the crop will begin in March.
