Bangladesh: Dhaka’s shops face sugar shortage

Dhaka: Major grocery shops in capital city of Bangladesh, Dhaka, is facing a shortage of sugar, wheat flour and other commodities, reports The Financial Express.

Consumers have complained that the grocery shops have run out of sugar, wheat flour and edible oil.

“The orders placed for October month are yet to reach warehouses creating a shortage, ” said a dealer-cum-grocer based in Mohammadpur Krishi Market.

Biswajit Saha, City Group Director said that the supply of sugar, flour and edible oil from refineries has become normal now.

S M Nazer Hossain, Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) Vice President said, “The conditions have not changed despite the government’s action against unscrupulous traders in the last decade.”

The government should withdraw import duty imposed on sugar and other commodities to make these items available to consumers, he said.
