Maharashtra government accepts sugarcane farmers’ one-time FRP demand

Mumbai: The state government has accepted farmers demand to give a one-time Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane rather than in two installments as fixed earlier, reports The Indian Express.

The decision was taken on Tuesday to help the sugarcane farmers. Cane growers under the banner of Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana had launched an agitation demanding a one-time FRP stating two instalments affect farmers and benefits sugar mills.

SSS leader Raju Shetti had stated that he would move a court against the government’s decision of FRP in two instalments. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in February 2022 had passed a resolution allowing the FRP to be paid in two tranches. This has irked the farmers and they started protest against the decision.

On Tuesday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a meeting with the representatives of sugarcane farmers including Shetti, former minister Sadabhau Khot, and others; and the decision to provide a one-time FRP was taken.
