Bengaluru: Sugarcane farmers have decided to continue agitation as the meeting between them and the government resulted in a deadlock on Monday, reports The Hindu.
Farmers had temporarily put off their planned hunger strike scheduled on Tuesday after Sugar Minister Shankar Patil Munenakoppa promised to convene a meeting with Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
While the farmers were offered Rs 50 out of Rs 126 from the profits accrued by sugar mills through the production of by-products from a tonne of sugarcane besides the fair and remunerative price (FRP), the farmers refused to accept the offer.
Kurubur Shanthkumar said, “We did not agree on the sharing of Rs 50 per tonne now and pay the remaining amount after ending the crushing season. The prices would be depending on the profits of the sugar mill.”
“We also wanted the reduction in the transportation cost which has been increased from Rs 250 to Rs 300,” he said.
“The government should consider that the State advised price fixed in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and announce SAP in the state,” he said.
