Sugarcane cultivation to begin in hilly regions of Uttarakhand

Khatina, Uttarakhand: Inspired by the increase in area under cane cultivation by 9% in 2022-23, the sugarcane department is planning to expand the cane cultivation in hilly regions of the state, reports Live Hindustan.

The department will be providing cane seeds to the farmers residing in villages in Pithauragarh region. The government is aiming to lower the dependence of the hilly region on sugar and promote jaggery production.

The pilot project will be implemented in Chamoli district of Garhwali after implementing it in Kumaun.

Kapil Mohan, acting assistant sugarcane commissioner, said that the area under cane cultivation during last year was 24567 hectares and it has now increased to 26714 hectares.

“We have discussed the plan with the concerned officials and will promote farmers to cultivate cane and produce jaggery,” he said.
