Haryana: BKU gives deadline to government to hike sugarcane price

Karnal: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) (Tikait) have decided to launch a state-wide agitation from December 25 to demand hike in the sugarcane state-advised price (SAP), reports Hindustan Times.

The decision was taken in the Kisan panchayat organised by the organisation in Panipat. The farmer leaders in a state-level panchayat have given one week deadline to the government to decide on increasing SAP for sugarcane at Rs 450 per quintal from the existing Rs 362 per quintal else they would start agitation.

Ratan Mann, president of the organisation, said if the government fails to hike SAP, the farmers would gather at all the sugar mills and block roads leading them for one hour.

The government is deliberately delaying the announcement of the sugarcane prices, alleged farmers.

The delay in fixing the prices has resulted in sugar mills not paying the current cane bills to the farmers despite starting cane crushing operations, said farmers.
