Addis Ababa, Ethiopia: By January 2023, the chronic sugar supply-demand shortage that has affected millions would come to an end, said the federal ministry of Trade and Regional Integration.
Most of the sugar mills that have stopped operations would restart which will ease the supply of the sweetener, said the Ministry.
Addis Abeba City Administration Trade Bureau admitted that in mid-December the city was severely hit by the shortage of sugar supply.
The city received less than half of the 120,000 quintals quota during the past four months which affected the supply, said Mesfin Assefa, deputy head of the bureau.
Sugar mills were shut due to a lack of foreign exchange, and a lack of factory spare parts which affected the supply said the Ministry. Apart from this, sugar imports were also affected due to a lack of foreign currency, it said.
The Ministry has stated that four sugar mills have started operations that would resolve sugar scarcity issue.
