Perambalur farmers worry over delay in cane transportation for crushing

Perambalur: Sugarcane farmers in the region have stated that they are worried over delays in the transportation of harvested cane from their fields to the Eraiyur sugar mill, reports The New Indian Express.

More than two weeks have passed since the beginning of the crushing season but they are not getting trucks to carry cane from fields to the mill, said farmers.

The mill is planning to crush around 3.60 lakh metric tons of sugarcane grown on 12,000 acres of land in Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore districts. The mill is expecting to produce 3.52 lakh quintals of sugar during the ongoing crushing season.

The delay in transportation of cane is resulting in farmers sending their cane to Thanjavur sugar mill.

“We have harvested cane and are waiting to transport it to the mill from the last two days. Excess exposure to sunlight would affect the quality of our crop,” said a farmer from the region.

P Anandhan, Cane Development Officer at the Eraiyur Sugar Mill said that around 10 trucks of cane are being crushed per hour in the mill instead of 15 trucks. The truck drivers are reluctant to drive down to the fields due to poor road conditions; he said that the issue would be resolved soon.
