Jaggery units may get industry tag in Karnataka

Bengaluru, Karnataka: Rising awareness about healthy lifestyle leading to the growing demand for jaggery and jaggery-based products, the state government is taking steps to regulate the sector to keep a check on adulteration, reports The Times of India.

The decision regarding conferring the ‘industry’ tag on the sector would be taken by a state-level coordination committee that will meet this week.
Consumption of jaggery will increase as the focus on sustainable lifestyle increases. India is the biggest exporter of jaggery and Karnataka is the third largest cane producer which can give an advantage to the state to increase jaggery production.

Jaggery units are not categorized as the industry as there is no large-scale machinery at the jaggery units like sugar mills, said a senior official.
