Govt to take call on increasing sugar export quota next month after assessing demand-supply

The government will take a decision next month on increasing the sugar export quota from current 60 lakh tonnes after assessing the domestic production and internal demand, Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra said on Thursday, reports Financial Express.

In November, government had allocated export of six million tonnes of sugar and so far the mills have exported 3MT of sugar. They would export the remaining sugar by May end.

Sanjeev Chopra of Department of food and public distribution said, “We are getting different view of sugar production this season and within next few weeks we will get exact estimate of sugar output.”

Government will fix second tranche of sugar exports based on the domestic consumption and allocation of ethanol production, he said.

Export contracts of 5MT sugar has been signed so far according to Indian Sugar Mills Association and it is expected that around 3-4 MT sugar exports would be allowed by the government.

Subodh Kumar Singh, additional secretary, department of food and public distribution said, “We have convened a meeting of sugarcane commissioner next month and during meeting we will assess the production of sugar for this season and will discuss about allocation of sugar exports”.

Sugar production in the country was estimated to be 36.5 MT but is revised to 34.3 MT due to heavy rainfall int he country.
