Scientists working on salt-tolerant sugarcane variety

Karnal: Scientists associated with the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Research Institute, Regional Centre, Karnal are working on developing salt-tolerant sugarcane variety for a saline-alkaline region of the north western region like Haryana, Punjab, UP, Bihar and Rajasthan, reports Tribune India.

On the premises of the institute, scientists are setting up a micro-chamber to check the salt concentration of various sugarcane varieties.
They will develop a saline-alkaline environment on the premises to study different varieties.

The center has so far released 20 such varieties that have become popular in these areas.

Dr. S K Pandey, head of the regional center said, “We are developing varieties that are salt resistant. Farmers are facing problems of alkaline land and new varieties of sugarcane will help in resolving them.”
