Farmers worry over delay in payment of cane dues

Ludhiana: Sugarcane farmers under the banner of Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) have alleged that the government is not fulfilling the promise of clearing cane dues in time, reports Tribune India.

BKU general secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal issued a statement noting that the state government had promised to clear the cane bills of farmers within 14 days and the creation of a special fund that will ensure timely cane payment to the cane farmers.

“But the sugar mills are clearing cane dues only after one month of crushing cane of the farmers,” he said.

Apart from this, the millers are paying Rs 50 per quintal less than the actual due to the farmers stating that the amount would be paid by the state government and mills will release the amount once they get it from the state government, he alleged.
