Barbados will be exporting 2,500 tons of packaged sugar to the US every year, reports Jamaica-Gleaner.
Orlando Atherley, the chief executive officer of the Barbados Agriculture Management Company (BAMC) said, “During this year’s harvest that begins from February 27, the agency should bring in BD $ 4.2 million in revenue from the sale of the packaged sugar to the US.”
Sugar from Barbados is getting double the price from packaged sugar than earlier, said Agriculture Minister Indar Weir.
Earlier we used to sell sugar at BD$900 per tonne but now we are selling sugar at $1500-1700 per tonne, he said.
“With packaged Barbados sugar we can penetrate the international market. Earlier we used to produce in bulk and export in bulk but now we are exporting sugar in packaged form. We are now exporting sugar to the US and will soon export it to the UK,” said Weir.
