New Delhi: The government has not yet considered increasing the sugar export quota from the existing 60 lakh tonnes for this marketing year, said Union Food Secretary Sanjeev Chopra, reports PTI
For the current marketing year (October-September) the food ministry has allowed the export of 60 lakh tonnes of sugar. In 2021-22 India exported a record 110 lakh tonnes of sugar.
“Compared to the last season, the sugar production is likely to be lower by 9 lakh tonnes and hence there is no proposal to increase the export quota,” he said.
According to Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), sugar production is estimated to fall 5% in the current marketing year to 340 lakh tonnes as more and more sugar has been diverted to ethanol production.
India produced 358 lakh tonnes of sugar in the 2021-22 marketing year. This year around 45 lakh tonnes of sugar has been diverted to ethanol production.
