Global wheat output likely to fall for the first time in 5 years: UN

The war in Ukraine and dry weather in Russia would result in lowering the global wheat output next season from a record high, said the United Nations, reports Live Mint.

As per the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation, wheat output for the 2023-24 season would fall around 1% to 784 million tons. For the first time in the last five years, there would be a decline in wheat output that would affect the global market.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupted crop prices last year but now the wheat prices have returned to pre-war levels.

As per the FAO estimates, a winter-wheat area in Ukraine has fallen 40% due to the war leading to financial constraints and infrastructure damage, and other problems affecting access to the fields. The dry weather in Russia has resulted in curbing sowing which may lead to a fall in the harvest at a record level.
