Sugar prices in Bangladesh unstable despite fixing MRP

The prices of sugar in the local market continue to remain higher despite fixing the maximum retail price (MRP) nine weeks ago by refiners and the government, reports Dhaka Tribune.

The price of packaged and loose sugar was fixed at Tk112 and Tk107 by the refiners on January 26 but the sweetener is still sold at Tk118-130 per kg.

Loose sugar was sold at Tk118-125 per kg while packaged sugar was sold at Tk120-130 per kg at groceries in Dhanmondi, Palashi and Segunbagicha.

The price label on the packets was Tk112 per kg but the groceries were selling at Tk120-130 per kg.

The maximum retail price (MRP) of sugar was revised by Bangladesh Sugar Refiners Association (BSRA) with the consent of the commerce ministry to Tk107 for loose sugar and Tk112 for packaged sugar on January 26.

On November 17, last year, the association of refiners of imported raw sugar had hiked prices by Tk8 per kg to Tk102 and Tk108 respectively.
The prices fixed by the government and the refiners are not working in the market, said SM Nazer Hossain, vice president of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB).
