Sugar export from Ukraine in the current marketing year (September 1, 2022, to March 28, 2023) has been increased by 4.8 times more than in the preceding marketing year to 265,000 tonnes, reports Ukrinform.
Nazar Mykhailovyn, Ukrtsukor Board Chairman said, “Sugar export was banned during the beginning of the war. The cabinet allowed sugar export on June 5, 2022. The country exported 55,000 tonnes of sugar in 2021-22 and it increased to 265,000 tonnes from September 1, 2022, to March 28, 2023.”
Ukraine can now ship sugar without tariff quotas and duties, as per the EU decision. Sugar output in Europe has been lower compared to that of Ukraine due to the drought last year and the price of sugar in the EU is higher than that of sugar in Ukraine.
“Ukraine is managing to sell sugar in Europe due to combat actions and the lack of seaports. We are exporting sugar through a rail route with the help of the government,” he said.
In 2022, Ukraine produced 1.33 million tonnes of sugar, which was 120,000 tonnes less than in 2021, according to Ukrtsukor.
