Brazil may become world’s top maize exporter

Farmers in Brazil are shifting towards maize cultivation, taking it as the main crop of the country which was the second crop for almost a decade, reports News24.

The maize production this year is likely to hit a new record, which would may make Brazil the world’s largest maize exporter ahead of the United States. The country had achieved this position earlier in 2013.

The maize crop is likely to increase by 10.4% compared to last season to 124.9 million tons, as per the latest report from the National Supply Company (Conab).

The opening of maize ethanol plants in 2017 and the rising prices of the cereal grain are motivating farmers to take up maize cultivation, said a farmer.

With an increase in production, the country will be able to export more maize, said Joao Pedro Lopes, of the commodity market analysis firm StoneX.
