George Town: The shortage of sugar in Kelantan and Terengganu was due to local management issues and not a crisis caused by supply disruption in the market, reports The Sun Daily.
Datuk Sri Salahuddin Ayub, Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Minister said that the issue has been addressed to ensure the regular supply of the sweetener in the local markets.
The workers of the sugar mills and distribution centres were on long leave which caused supply disruption.
“The average use of sugar for the east coast is 400 metric tonnes per week and we have increased the sugar supply by 35% or 614.12 metric tonnes for four days to meet the demand,” he said.
The Ministry has launched Ops Manis from May 3 to 6 to resolve the sugar shortage issue in the two states.
