Kenya: MP demands regulation on sugar importation to keep check on illegal entry of sweetener

Martin Wanyoni, Webuye East MP has urged the Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi regulate to regulate importation of sugar to avoid illegal entry of the commodity into the country, reports Standard Media.

Sugarcane farmers will suffer due to unnecessary importation of the commodity when the millers are capable of producing sufficient sugar across the country, he said.

“CS should ensure that strict guidelines are followed while importing sugar. Our farmers should not suffer due to the importation of cheap sugar in the country,” he said.

The sugar being sold in local markets is more than what the local mills have produced, he claimed.

“There is more sugar in the market than what is produced by Mumias and Nzoia which indicates that the commodity is being illegally imported which is repackaged and sold in the country at the cost of local millers,” he said.
