Sugarcane farmers in the Mandya district and neighboring areas are concerned as the water level in the KRS dam reduced, according to a report from The Times of India.
The KRS dam serves as a vital source of water for farmers in the region, and authorities have announced that if the water level reaches 74 feet, it will be allocated for drinking purposes only.
The farmers are worried that if the inflow of water into the dam does not improve by June, they will face difficulties in irrigating their sugarcane crops.
As of Thursday, the water inflow stood at 629 cusecs, with the water level at 85.84 feet. The outflow was 2336 cusecs including 1,252 cusecs of water at Visvesvaraya canal.
Anand, the superintendent engineer of the KRS dam, emphasized that once the water level drops to 74 feet, it will be reserved for drinking water supplies.
AL Kempugowda, the Mandya district unit head of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, expressed concerns about the potential impact on sugarcane crops if water is not released from the dam in a timely manner.
With the water level steadily declining, the farming community anxiously awaits measures to address the water scarcity issue and safeguard their sugarcane crops.
