The progress of the southwest monsoon current towards India’s mainland is likely to be hamper by the formation of a low-pressure area in the Arabian Sea and cyclonic circulation, as per the latest update from India Meteorological Department, according to livemint.
Usually, the southwest monsoon starts its journey into the Indian subcontinent on June 1 beginning with the Kerala coast. IMD had in early May stated that the onset of Monsoon over Kerala would be on 4 June.
Agricultural production in India depends on the Monsoon as around 52% of the area under cultivation relies on it. It is also important for drinking water as well as for power generation in the country.
The weather department has stated that there will be normal rainfall during this season despite the El Nino phenomenon.
Delays in monsoon would result in farmers delaying sowing Kharif crops.
