Worrisome spread of top borer disease raises concern among sugarcane farmers

Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh: Sugarcane farmers are increasingly concerned about the spread of top borer disease in their fields. The region has started showing signs of infection, prompting worries among the agricultural community, reports Live Hindustan.

Divisional officials have indicated that the area dedicated to cane cultivation is expected to expand this season compared to the previous year’s 1.21 lakh hectares. Certain parts of the district have already witnessed the onset of top borer disease. If prompt measures are not taken, there is a risk that it may spread to other areas, leading to substantial crop damage.

Dr. R.K. Kushwah, in charge of the Agriculture Science Centre, explained that the top borer disease causes the upper portion of the cane crop to dry out, thereby impacting crop productivity. To control the spread of the disease, timely application of insecticides is crucial, he emphasized.
