Malaysian lawmakers raise concern over allowing refineries to sell conventional as well as non-price-controlled sugar

Kuala Lumpur: The MPs have raised concern over the decision of the government to allow two sugar refineries to sell refined white sugar Jernih along with price-controlled conventional granulated sugar, reports The Star.

The Domestic and Cost of Living Ministry must tell us how it will use a monitoring mechanism for this, said Cha Kee Chin (PH-Rasah).

The market would determine the prices of Refined White Sugar Jernih, said Domestic and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

“This will give consumers a choice to choose the sugar they want, hence the government has agreed to this application,” he said.

“The MSM Malaysia Holdings Bhd and Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR) should ensure that there is a sufficient supply of conventional granulated sugar, whether coarse or fine-grained,” he added.
