Georgetown: The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) has decided to produce 60,000 tons of sugar by year-end to meet domestic demand, reports Caribbeannationalweekly.
President Dr Irfaan Ali said that the government is taking steps to boost sugar production.
“We should produce 60,000 tons of sugar by year-end and increase it to 100,000 tons in the New Year,” he said.
The reopening of Rose Hall Estate in Region Six (East Berbice – Crentyne) and other developments would help in increasing production later this year.
Cultivation of sugar is one of the major challenges to the country, pointed out Ali.
Guyana is collaborating with India, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic to get scientific help to increase sugarcane plantations.
These countries are expected to help Guyana to set up a new plant nursery with suitable varieties of crops that would be sufficient to meet the local demand, he said.
The government led by Ali has stated that it will be investing heavily in the sugar industry to revive the sector and make the industry lucrative once again.
