Pune: After achieving success in Maharashtra, UPL is working on signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with 15 sugar mills from several states including Telangana, Karnataka, UP, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh for FY24 to implement sustainable farming practices, reports The Times of India.

The company had earlier collaborated with Shreenath Mhaskoba Sugar Mill near Pune and supplied water-saving products Zeba and Pronutiva to farmers from 70 villages associated with the sugar mill. Farmers have reported an increase in yield and less usage of water for crops. The company expects that cane yield can be improved by using these products by 15%, and around 1200 farmers around Pune will benefit from this.

Zeba, produced using corn starch, is a superabsorbent that can absorb water 400 times its body weight and release moisture when the superabsorbent can absorb water 400 times its body weight and can release moisture when the crop is under stress. The aim is to save around 6 lakh litres of water per acre and reduce fertilizers consumption by 50 kg per acre.
