Farmers urge govt to recover pending cane dues from private millers

Chennai: Sugarcane farmers from Tamil Nadu have urged the state government to recover their pending cane dues from private sugar mills, reports DTnext.

The Tamil Nadu Sugarcane Farmers Association has issued a statement mentioning that the farmers were paid the state-advised price (SAP) for sugarcane that was more than the FRP fixed by the Centre. “The South India Sugar Mills Association (SIAM) had filed a case in the Madras High Court against the decision of announcing SAP for sugarcane by the then Jayalalithaa government in 2013-14. It stated that the state government has no power to announce SAP and it did not pay SAP to the farmers for four years from 2013-14 to 2016-17.”

The high court has ordered that the state government has the power to fix SAP and directed the state government to hold tripartite meetings to collect the dues from the mills to the farmers.
