Nairobi: The Kenya Union of Sugarcane Plantation Workers has urged the government to grant permission to millers to import sugar owing to a lack of raw material, reports Capitalfm.
Francis Wangara, the Union Secretary General said that the millers are about to close their factories due to the non-availability of raw materials.
“The mills are likely to close by the end of this month despite repeated meetings of the Sugar Directorate with the millers,” he said.
“Sugar importation will resolve the issue of sugar shortage in the country and the millers should allow thousands of workers to keep their jobs,” said Wangara.
The millers should be allowed to import sugar into the country as what they are milling now is not profitable. They are harvesting premature cane due to which the sugar output is lower, he said.
