Marayur jaggery price reaches new record of Rs 120 per kg

Idukki, Kerala: The jaggery produced in Marayur from Idukki district has become popular among buyers with its price reaching a new record of Rs 120 per kg, reports The Hindu.

The price is likely to increase further due to the rise in demand ahead of the Onam season, said vendors. They have also stated that the price has been increased due to a rise in demand and lesser production of the jaggery.

Excess rainfall in the region has damaged the sugarcane crop as well as jaggery production. The average growth period of sugarcane is 12 months but the harvesting was delayed due to heavy rainfall that has disrupted the jaggery production leading to the increase in the price, said a jaggery producer in the district.

Another vendor from the region said the shortage of the commodity has increased the price of jaggery from Rs 90 per kg to Rs 120 per kg.
