If waterlogging continues for long time it may impact sugarcane and fodder

Meerut: Heavy rain has led to waterlogging in low lying areas in Meerut and Saharanpur regions. It may damage the sugarcane crops grown in the fields, reports Hindustan Times.

Ganga and Yamuna rivers are flowing above the warning level aggravating the situation.

The water from the rivers is overflowing into the sugarcane fields lying adjacent to the rivers, which may damage the cane crops and fodder.

Dr. Dinesh Chandra, district magistrate of Saharanpur said that the administration is taking review of the situation and the teams of NDRF have been deployed on the spot for rescue operations.

If the rain continues, the discharge from the river would increase further, leading to a rise in the water levels of the rivers, said engineer Piyush Baliyan, deputed at Ganga Barrage in Bijnor.

Pradhan of Kishorpur village in Hastinapur area Rishipal Malik said that the overflowing Ganga had caused waterlogging in farms located in low-lying areas. “If waterlogging continues for a long time it would ruin the crops of sugarcane and fodder which may lead to severe shortage in coming days,” he added.
