Sugar is being sold at higher rates in Bangladesh despite a warning of tough action by Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi, reports The Financial Express.
Sugar millers are making a profit of around Tk 15 more than the regulated level at current prices, as per the Tariff Commission.
The bdenews24.com has reported that sugar is being sold at higher prices in the domestic markets than the prices fixed by the government.
Tough action will lead to the disappearance of sugar from the market and hence the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) is not taking any action.
The sugar millers had sent a letter to the commerce secretary on June 19 informing him about the increase in the price of sugar by Tk 25 per kg.
Minister Munshi said that the decision on the new price will be taken after Eid and steps will be taken to reduce sugar VAT and other tariffs to maintain sugar prices in the domestic market.
Two weeks have passed since Eid, the government has not taken any decision regarding sugar prices and the consumers are forced to purchase sugar at higher rates.
