Chennai: Sugarcane farmers in Tamil Nadu have been reeling under the attack of wild boars and the supply of wild boar repellent would be a great relief for them to protect their cane crops. The Vellore Cooperative Mill would supply the product to all the farmers across the state from Friday, reports Daiji World.
According to sources, the cost of the repellent is around Rs 500 per liter with Rs 90 as GST. The repellant is produced by the Agricultural Research Station of Tamil Nadu Agriculture University and will be available for farmers at subsidized rates.
The state government has placed an order for 10,000 liters of repellant to cover cane grown over 5,000 acres.
Dr. Thirumurugan from the Agricultural Research Station informed the media that their team has been creating a repellent to keep wild boars away from sugarcane farms for the last four years. They’ve been providing this repellent to local farmers.
The repellent will be put in little plastic boxes and attached to a wire between wooden poles along the edge of the area, about 2.5 feet above the ground. These small plastic boxes will have holes so that the repellent can come out into the field.
Professor Thirumurugan mentioned that 500 ml of the repellent would be sufficient for one acre of sugarcane field.
