Uganda: The associations of sugarcane growers from Masindi, Mukono and Busoga have demanded changes in the sugarcane zoning and have petitioned to the Speaker of Parliament, Rebecca Kadago, in this regard. Farmers called it as an outdated model and alleged that farmers land is grabbed for production for a particular mill in this case.
The farmers have stated that if the government is taking up the zoning, the government should make some changes. They want their land to be treated as an investment, and 60 per cent shares of the factory should be owned by farmers as they supply 70 per cent of the raw material to the mills.
They demanded that farmers should be included in the factory governing body, and they want penalty of 3 per cent interest per month if cane crushing is delayed beyond the time frame.
