Sugar mill catches fire; farmers worried about crushing of standing cane crop

Bijnor: Shutting down of Dhanaura sugar mill at the end of the cane crushing season has worried the farmers falling in the mill’s jurisdiction.

The mill located at Amroha belongs to Chaddha Group and closed a day after a massive fire broke out in the mill that gutted the lakhs of quintals of bagasse stored in the mill premises. Around six lakh quintals of sugarcane crop are awaiting for cutting and crushing.

According to mill officials, they are trying their best to resume crushing, but if mill fails to restart, they will take the cane to group’s Bijnor mill for crushing.

The sudden fire engulfed the mill’s bagasse at around 3.30 pm on Saturday. The intensity of the fire was high that the lakhs of quintals of bagasse gutted in the ablaze. The fire tenders worked for hours to douse the fire.

The mill officials are yet to ascertain about the cause of the fire.

A K Singh, administrative officer of Chaddha Group’s Bijnor mill said, “The Dhanaura mill has been shut down due to fire. Around 55 trucks laden with sugarcane from Dhanaura mill have reached here.”

“We are worried about who will crush our cane as the mill has stopped crushing. Around 5 per cent of cane standing in fields awaits cutting and transporting to mill for crushing. If the mill does not take our cane then we have to sell it to others at the cheap rate,” said local farmer from Dhanaura.
