NSI to provide necessary technical assistance for production of green hydrogen in sugar factories

National Sugar Institute, Kanpur to take up task of creating awareness and providing necessary technical assistance for production of green hydrogen in sugar factories. National Sugar Institute signed a MoU with M/s Pagnism Innovations Pvt. Ltd., Sangli, Maharashtra, a start-up company for the purpose.

Initial pilot plant scale trials for producing green hydrogen from compressed bio-gas have yielded satisfactory results. The process involves catalytic conversion of compressed biogas having methane content of 92% or more in a fluidized bed reactor to obtain green hydrogen. The process also involves steps for cooling and scrubbing of gas.

During the initial trials on compressed biogas as obtained from sugar factories, we could achieve a yield of 25% green hydrogen and 75% carbon black. While green hydrogen about which everyone is talking about as a fuel for future, the carbon black is also a value added product which has high demand in tire, paint, rubber, cosmetic and toner industry said Shri Narendra Mohan, Director, National Sugar Institute, Kanpur.

We are working on economics but looking to revenues from carbon black, the cost of production of hydrogen is going to less, said Dr. Mahesh Pagnis, Director, M/s Pagnis Innovations Pvt. Ltd. National Sugar Institute is going to help us in developing a model suiting to sugar industry environment, he added.

The two organizations shall conduct live demonstration of the technology at National Sugar Institute, Kanpur in December 2023 before the sugar industry personnel.

  1. Congratulations. It is a great achievement to tie up with NSI. You have now access to sugar factories with huge potential for production of green hydrogen. I am sure you will develop many scale models to suit specific requirements of Sugar and Distillery complexes and help them to streamline production of green hydrogen to meet increasing demands of energy.
