Ethanol boost: India’s first bamboo-based biorefinery to start operations next year

Assam: Numaligarh Refinery (NRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Oil India, is planning to start ethanol production at its biorefinery in Assam in March 2024. This Assam-based biorefinery is poised to become the nation’s pioneer in utilizing bamboo as a primary feedstock.

The biorefinery is set to have an annual output of 50,000 tonnes of ethanol, 16,000 tonnes of furfural, and 11,000 tonnes of acetic acid.

Amid the growing global emphasis on transitioning towards sustainable energy sources, consumers and oil importers are actively seeking to reduce their dependence on crude oil.

Indian is leaving no stone unturned to achive the 20 per cent ethanol blending target by 2025.
