Phagwara: Sugarcane farmers to protest over unpaid cane dues

Phagwara, Punjab: The Bhartiya Kisan Union (Doaba), a farmers’ organization, announced on Saturday that they will hold a ‘dharna’ on November 2 to protest the non-payment of cane farmers’ dues, which amount to about Rs 42 crore, by a local sugar mill here, reported PTI.

For the past three years, farmers have been demanding the settlement of the pending Rs 42 crore.

Kirpal Singh Moosapur, senior vice president of BKU(D), emphasized that the dues, along with interest, should be settled before the mill can resume operations, especially since the crushing season is around the corner.

Last month, the farmers had locked the gates of the sugar mill and staged a four-day ‘dharna’ to exert pressure on the authorities to fulfill the cane farmers’ dues. This action was taken after the mill’s owners failed to keep their promise of settling the dues in installments, explained general secretary Satnam Singh Sahni.
