Chandigarh: The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella organization of various farmer unions, has announced a three-day protest starting November 26 to press for various demands, including guarantee for MSP (Minimum Support Price) from the central government, reported Tribune India.
The protest will also demand the withdrawal of cases registered against farmers during the year-long agitation against the now-repealed farm laws, compensation and jobs for the families of farmers who died during the protest, debt waiver, and pension for farmers.
Joginder Singh Ugrahan, President of Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan), asserted that the agitation would spotlight the unmet demands of farmers.
SKM leaders have stated that a large number of farmers will participate in the protest and that they will proceed towards the governor’s residence if not prevented. They have also demanded the withdrawal of FIRs registered against farmers for burning their crop residue and complete compensation for crop damage caused by floods.
The Samyukt Kisan Morcha’s announcement comes amidst growing concerns among farmers over the government’s failure to address their demands. The protest is likely to put pressure on the government to take action on the pending demands of farmers.
Anticipating a significant turnout, Harinder Singh Lakhowal, General Secretary of BKU (Lakhowal), emphasized that numerous farmers would converge at the designated protest sites to participate in the agitation.
Referring to the ongoing protest at Jalandhar, Lakhowal slammed the AAP government for not announcing sugarcane prices and the commencement of crushing season for cane.
“We are demanding that the state government should announce Rs 450 a quintal for sugarcane,” he said.
