Kolhapur: Raju Shetti, the president of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, farmers organisation, along with 14 other known members and 2,500 protesters have been booked by the police for violating prohibitory orders, unlawful assembly, and wrongful restraint, reported The Times of India.
The group, led by Shetti, had blocked the Pune-Bengaluru national highway passing through Kolhapur city for nearly eight and a half hours on Thursday. This caused significant inconvenience for travelers coming from both Pune and Karnataka.
As per media reports, the case under sections 143, 149 (both related to unlawful assembly), 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code and section 135 (disobeying prohibitory orders) under the Maharashtra Police Act has been filed at the Shiroli MIDC police station.
According to police officials, notices will be served to Shetti and the others informing them of the charges against them. Since all the charges are bailable, Shetti and his supporters are likely to file for bail. Legal experts have stated that no arrest is required in such cases.
