In the midst of ever-growing quest for more knowledge and willingness to challenge the limits of existing knowledge and to venture into uncharted territory, cross border education plays an important role. Where, National Sugar Institute has been a staunch body in the Indian Sugar Industry for education and research, it has always paved distinct ways in enhancing the circumferences to scale growth, it is now diversifying various opportunities for countries around the globe to gain training programs for development and modernization of the sugar industry.
National Sugar Institute, Kanpur is on a verge to sign a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with Sugarcane Research Institute, Sri Lanka.
In a conversation with ChiniMandi.com, Director, NSI, Professor Narendra Mohan said, “Director of Sugar Research Institute, Sri Lanka is likely to visit our institute later this month. Upon his arrival, we shall complete the formalities of signing the MoU.” He said that the MoU has already been finalised.
NSI anticipates helping Sri Lanka in development and modernization of sugar industry there, for that NSI will be conducting a faculty development program for the staff of Sugarcane Research Institute, Sri Lanka shall also conduct short duration training programskai for the technical staff of the sugar factories in Sri Lanka. He added
We have already received request letters and drafts of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU’s) from Egypt, Sri Lanka and Nigeria. We are expecting more such MOU’s with other sugar producing countries such as Indonesia and Thailand for which the discussions are going on”, said Prof Mohan.
He added that similar request along with draft MOU has been received from Sugar Technology Research Institute, Egypt where they have intended to work with National Sugar Institute, Kanpur to carry out collaborative research on developing newer technologies and products for improving the revenue earning of the sugar factories. “They have invited experts from NSI to visit them to speed up the work”, he mentioned.
These associations will also help NSI in understanding the sugar production process in beet sugar factories as many of the sugar factories in Egypt work on sugar beet as a raw material and will act as an important key in transmitting the acquired knowledge to the students who otherwise are conversant with production of sugar from sugarcane only, Prof Mohan added.
Another MOU has been received from Nigerian Sugar Development Council, Nigeria for seeking NSI assistance in developing a sugar institute therein. “Accordingly, NSI, Kanpur shall prepare the detailed project report for the same and shall also organize training programs for the personnel who later on will work as faculty in the Nigerian Sugar Institute. The MOU is under consideration at the ministry and team of experts from NSI may visit Nigeria in July 2019 for the purpose”, NSI Director said.
Such global acceptance and NSI working for other sugar producing countries shall also earn sizable revenue by way of consultancy rendered which is an integral part in all the MOU’s and will strengthen the goodwill of the institute on the world map. Prof. Mohan added.
The institute is not far from becoming a ‘World Sugar Guru’ as well as a world-class institute by undertaking matters related to development of teaching and training facilities in Sugar Engineering, Sugar Technology, Sugarcane Development and other related subjects for many sugar producing countries.
