Reliance Industries (RIL), India’s most valuable company, is reportedly engaged in discussions with sugar mill operators to secure sugarcane press mud—an essential raw material for the production of compressed biogas (CBG), reported Live Mint.
An executive involved in the discussions stated, “RIL is contacting large sugar mills for press mud to support its CBG plants. The company has approached several sugar mills across the country that are capable of supplying substantial volumes of press mud daily.” RIL has however not responded to queries regarding this development.
In a September announcement, RIL Chairman Mukesh Ambani unveiled ambitious plans to establish 100 CBG plants within the next five years. These upcoming plants are expected to utilize 5.5 million tonnes of agricultural residue and organic waste. Currently, RIL operates a CBG plant in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, marking its entry into the CBG production landscape.
During the 7th Edition of the Bengal Global Business Summit in Kolkata on November 21, Ambani highlighted that the conglomerate has become India’s largest bio-energy producer based on its indigenous developed technology. He emphasized, “Reliance is carrying out this responsibility with multiple initiatives in new energy, including bio-energy. India has the potential to become the largest producer of bioenergy in the world. We aim to establish 100 compressed biogas (CBG) plants in the next three years, consuming 5.5 million tonnes of agricultural residue and organic waste.”
