Vellore: Vellore Cooperative Sugar Mill witnessed a dramatic turn of events as the cane crushing date was rescheduled on Thursday. Before the decision, farmers had issued a threat to stage a protest in front of the mill’s administrative office if the inauguration of crushing was delayed, reported DTnext.
Known for its prompt disbursement of dues to farmers, the Vellore unit opted to commence crushing operations on Thursday, December 14.
As per news report, certain senior party functionaries conveyed to the mill administration that the crushing should be deferred to December 17, citing the impending demission of Chairman M Anandan on the evening of December 17. Upon learning of this proposed delay, farmers gathered at the mill office seeking clarification on the reasons behind the postponement and expressing concern about the wages of laborers already engaged for the initial four days.
Faced with the prospect of an agitation at the mill, officials promptly alerted district authorities. In response, the district officials reached out to the Minister, who advised against creating unnecessary problems and urged adherence to the original plan.
