The sugarcane crushing season in Uttar Pradesh has gained momentum, with sugar production also commencing effectively. According to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited, as of December 15, 2023, the crushing season for 2023-24 has begun in 120 sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, resulting in the crushing of 243.55 lakh tonnes of sugarcane and production of 22.65 lakh tonnes of sugar.
Comparatively, by the same period in the previous season 2022-23, 117 sugar mills in the state had crushed 229.94 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 20.35 lakh tonnes of sugar production. This indicates that Uttar Pradesh is leading in both sugarcane crushing and sugar production in the current crushing season.
The state also exhibits a higher sugar recovery rate compared to the previous season. As of December 15, 2023, the average sugar recovery stands at 9.30%, while in the same period of the preceding season, it was 8.85%. The estimated sugar production in Uttar Pradesh for the current season is 110 lakh tonnes.
With the onset of the current season, the sugarcane department is ensuring that the cane payments are made promptly and efficiently to farmers. It’s noteworthy that owing to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s strong stance, sugar mills in the state showed notable improvement in payment efficiency during the previous crushing season.
