Mayiladuthurai: Farmers protest sugarcane procurement for Pongal hampers

Mayiladuthurai: A faction of farmers from Sembathaniruppu village near Sirkazhi in Mayiladuthurai district staged a road blockade on Monday, temporarily obstructing the Sirkazhi-Nagapattinam Highway. The farmers pressed for the district administration’s intervention to procure paneer karumbu (sugarcane) from them for inclusion in the Pongal gift hamper distribution, reported The Hindu.

As per media report, contingent of 41 farmers from Sembathaniruppu village claimed that the sugarcane intended for distribution during the Pongal festival through fair-price shops had not been sourced from their produce. Mayiladuthurai Collector A.P. Mahabharathi promptly responded to the situation, rushing to the scene and engaging in discussions with the protesting farmers.

During the talks, the Collector assured the farmers that the district administration would adhere to the guidelines set by the State government and procure sugarcane.
