Pune: Deccan Sugar Institute was established in the year 1975 by sugarcane farmers of Maharashtra under the guidance of Former Chief Minister of Vasantdada Patil. Deccan Sugar Institute was renamed as ‘Vasantdada Sugar Institute’ (VSI) after Vasantdada Patil. For the last 25 years Under the chairmanship and guidance of Mr. Sharadchandraji Pawar, the work of the organization is going on with great vigor and vision. All kinds of scientific, technical and educational work related to sugar industry and related by-products are carried out in this institute. It is the only organization in the world founded by farmers committed to the advancement of sugarcane farming and the sugar industry.
VSI aims to improve the social and economic status of sugarcane farmers and sugar mills by providing them with new and advanced technology through three channels: Research & Development, Consultancy Services and Training & Extension. Established by farmers for farmers, this organization operates on the principle of ‘no profit, no loss’.
Various types of training classes, workshops, seminars and gatherings are organized every year for manpower development through ‘VSI’. A feature of these courses is the interaction between the institutes, sugarcane farmers and factories. Various regular and short term courses are conducted in VSI since 1981. Students from Maharashtra and other states and abroad as well as employees working in sugar mills take admission for this course.
So far 9620 students have completed regular courses of ‘VSI’ and 6254 students have completed short term courses so far. VSI has organized tailor-made education and training programs for officers and employees of sugar mills abroad and conducted on-site training classes. VSI conducts intensive training programs for officers and employees of overseas factories.
Students who have completed such courses have mastered factory work and are performing well in sugar factories in India and abroad. On the suggestion of President of the organization Shri. Sharadchandraji Pawar, the meeting of former students has been organized on 11th January 2024 in addition to the International Sugar Conference to be held on 12th to 14th January 2024. Alumni from all over the country will come for this gathering.
